Youth to the fore! Martin Fuchs (SUI) wins

A CSI3* world ranking competition with jump-off, 42 competitors, €27,000 in prize money, an attractive 1.50 m course with tricky obstacles designed by Frank Rothenberger (GER), a fast and challenging jump-off - those were the ingredients for an exciting evening of equestrian sport at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER.

It ended as it had begun: with an all-out round by the young Swiss rider Martin Fuchs as the first starter to go round the track and in the jump-off he again showed his tremendous talent for show jumping. Without having to correct even once, the Olympic Champion at the 2010 Youth Games and double European Young Rider Champion guided his ten-year-old Holstein gelding PSG Future so skilfully round the course that none of the 16 following competitors was anything like a match for him. The 21-year-old Swiss rider’s 29.26 seconds was by far the winning time. Hardly surprising, as many of the best have long seen him as a hot contender.

For example the double Olympic Champion, World and European Champion Lars Nieberg (GER) who also posted a superb round with his 11-year-old Casallora. His time was however just under three seconds slower, which meant second today. Gerco Schröder, the double silver medallist at the London 2012 Olympics, was the next to try and beat him. The Dutchman also placed with a clear round on the Quasimodo Z daughter Zamora. Over five seconds behind the winner, he claimed third.

Today, 17 of the 42 starters had clear first rounds, qualifying them for the jump-off. They also included the two Alpenspan Team and GLOCK riders Dieter Köfler and Gerfried Puck. While Gerfried Puck on Balou Blom landed ten penalty points in the jump-off for the thankless 13th position, thus missing the placings by one, Dieter Köfler riding his spirited GLOCK’s Zyrano only ran up eight faults. This finally put him in 12th and therefore just inside the placings.
