Viva Italia! Emanuele Gaudiano in his forte
There were 43 starters in the first CSI4* world ranking competition at the GLOCK HORSE PERFORMANCE CENTER, which was a 1.50 m today and decided with a winning round. Of them, 12 went clear and therefore also qualified for the decider — at least 25% of the athletes according to the rules. Three had an infuriating time penalty, thus missing their chance to win: GLOCK rider Dieter Köfler (AUT/Carinthia) on GLOCK’s Prince de Vaux, Athina Onassis de Miranda (GRE) on AD Camille Z and Olympic and World Champion Jos Lansink (BEL) on Virtuose d’Hyrencourt.
The course for the winning round was 400 metres long and again exceedingly demanding. Given the skill of the remaining competitors one thing was clear: only a fast and flawless ride could lead to a win here. No problem for ‘Mr Speed’ Emanuele Gaudiano (ITA). The number 34 in the world rankings went flat out with his eight-year-old gelding Admara, rode the turns extremely tightly, the obstacles at an angle and reached the finish in 49.70 seconds. A tough nut that none of the other athletes could crack — the Italian thus took top honours.
Another very experienced rider tried hard, but despite a fast clear round, multiple European Champion John Whitaker and his 12-year-old stallion Maximillian had to settle for second place in the end (51.48).
Third at the CSI3* Lons Le Saunier, winner at the CSI3* Munich-Riem and today Finland’s top female rider Maiju Mallat was delighted with a cool clear round on her experienced stallion Urleven van de Helle and third slot.
Alpenspan team and GLOCK rider Gerfried Puck showed GLOCK’s Wibo B who jumped very powerfully and went clear right up to the last fence. A pole then unfortunately fell after all, but with the fastest four-faults round the pair was justifiably proud of finishing fifth in a starting field chock-full of famous riders.
After doing well in the first round, luck was not on the side of Julia Kayser (AUT/Tyrol) and her nine-year-old mare Sterrehof’s Ushi. In the winning round they had two knockdowns, but tenth in this difficult competition was an absolutely top result.
