Keeping fingers crossed, Edward's lucky charms and a rest for Frits

"First you have to find your way around," is the general opinion at Greenwich Park. Following the dazzling opening ceremony that fascinated even the most blasé old hands, it is time for some sport today. Eventing opens with dressage and the dressage specialists are also on the spot to take a good look at the arena under competition conditions. A large number of spectators plan to do the same. The atmosphere at the venue is amazing even on the first day. You can tell that the British love eventing.

"The stadium is gigantic, the rows of spectators unbelievable, making you realise what 'thundering' applause means," says trainer Nicole Werner while keeping her fingers crossed for Team Netherlands along with the other Dutch.

At the same time, groom Vanessa watches the trailers being scanned. Everything is scrutinised, every item of baggage inspected. "The security here is really something but on the other hand it is for our own safety, so it's OK."

"GLOCK's Undercover is a rascal," laughs Edward © GHPC Nicole Werner

And what is GLOCK's Undercover doing? "He has a day off today," explains trainer Nicole while the gelding looks cheekily out of his stall. Right in front of him Edward Gal treats himself to a coffee – sitting back in a director's chair – and Frits seems to be saying, "I might just get the cup to play with." "He needs the break today," laughs Edward, as Frits cranes his neck. "It was a long night for him so he should get some rest. We won't start training until tomorrow," adds Nicole Werner.

"For the horses it is not easy here at all. The hustle and bustle, lots of people, the big screen – some are quite sensitive to it all, others not at all. "I've only had Frits under the saddle for six months but if everything goes well he can take one of the top places." Does Edward have any good luck charms? Something he always has with him? He grins mischievously: "my orange watch, an orange belt and matching pants underneath." Orange too? Of course! "Orange forever, after all," he grins roguishly, laughing at my question as to how he manages that under white breeches. "Why not? I'm in the saddle."
