Austria with Markus Saurugg on top in the Bronze Tour

There was certainly no lack of excitement in today’s Bronze Tour 1.35 m jumping class! It opened with start number one from Switzerland Paul Estermann (SUI) and his ten-year-old Westphalian mare Quinara 13. The two mastered the course nimbly and confidently, posting 57.02 seconds as the time to beat. For a long time it looked as if it was to be a runaway victory for the experienced rider, as no one managed to outdo him. Soenke Kohrock from Germany did his best to take the lead with his ten-year-old Iwest Lantino, but despite producing a very accomplished round still slotted in behind the Swiss.

As the competition progressed, Estermann’s lead appeared to be unshakeable and victory within reach. But then the current number in the Top of Austria rankings, Markus Saurugg, went in for the attack with his experienced Austrian warmblood stallion Nino D’Angelo, showing no mercy. He managed every turn at top speed and more tightly than anyone before him. It was as if the successful pair were virtually flying round the course. A glance at the scoreboard left the Styrian smiling - none of the 15 other riders who had gone clear could match his phenomenal time of 56.84. Following his win on Friday in the Youngster Tour, he was therefore presented with the beautiful GLOCK Sieger trophy for the second time today. “I’m particularly pleased to have won on my ‘pensioner’ at the stables. Nino is happy when he’s at a competition and it’s really fun to ride him. I naturally hope that I can carry on winning.”

Austria’s leading lady in jumping, Julia Kayser (Tyrol), also succeeded in being placed - taking seventh position on Alicante.
